Letter of Introduction

Subject: Self-introduction letter of Teo Joshua

To the readers of my blog,

My name is Teo Joshua, and I am writing this letter to formally introduce myself and tell you more about who I am as a person. I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in April of 2019 with a diploma in aerospace engineering. I went on to serve my 2 years of national service, where I trained as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist. I secured a place at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SiT) as a mechanical engineering student and began my undergraduate journey in September of 2021.

My interest in mechanical engineering started when I was working with remotely operated vehicles during my national service. For such a small robot, I was fascinated by its capabilities, such as movable arms to grab objects and long-range voice transmitters for communication. I was also intrigued by the technology behind the coding of the robots to do what they are supposed to do, which piqued my interest in programming. I found out that the mechanical engineering degree course at SiT offers a specialization program in year 2 for mechatronics, which combines mechanical engineering and programming. Hence, I decided to study mechanical engineering at SiT so I can code my own droid in the future.

One special trait that differentiates me from the other students is my determination to finish what I started before tending to other things. When setting my mind to something, I will sit through it until I have completed what I have set for myself, sometimes even skipping meals.

One of my strengths in communication is my volume. I can project my voice to ensure all my audiences can hear me. To ensure a safe and successful conduct during my national service, my volume ensures that the men under me can hear what I am saying clearly so they know what their roles and responsibilities are. As for my weakness, I have a hard time conveying my thoughts into words. This causes me to stumble and look back at my pointers, reducing my eye contact with the audience as well as my confidence, and I end up breaking the flow of my presentation.

Lastly, through this effective communications module, my first goal is to improve on the weakness I have mentioned by learning how I can convey my thoughts to words quickly and confidently. Being able to confidently present will greatly increase the power of my message, and this skill can easily transfer over to other areas, such as job interviews. My second goal is to make writing a second nature to me. I aim to eliminate all common mistakes such as grammar, as well as improve my vocabulary and sentence structure to make my writing smooth and effective.

I look forward to making the acquaintance of my classmates and having a fruitful 15 weeks of learning to become a better communicator.

Best Regards,

Teo Joshua

  2. Hello Joshua, thank you for writing this self-introduction letter. You have covered all the important pointers and have elaborated very well on all of them. A possible improvement you could make to your letter would be in paragraph 5, the line "My second goal is to make writing second nature." with an addition of "... to me.". Overall, the letter was well written and thought out, and I have learnt a little more about you through it. See you in class!

  3. Dear Joshua,

Thank you for this well developed, interesting letter. You certainly portray yourself as being quite unique in terms of your background in robotics and unique NS experience. I hope you can share what you have learned with your various class teammates. It's also good to see that you were inspired to continue your studies at SIT by your interest in mechatronics.

In terms of your comm skills weaknesses and your goals for the module, we will certainly address everything that you have mentioned (as you can already see).

Here's a very minor point of phrasing to take note of:

-- as a mechanical engineer student > as a mechanical engineering student

I look forward to hearing more from you this term.

    Best wishes,

    Brad

  4. Hi Joshua ! I personally think that you are good writer. You’re sentences are straight forward and can be easily understood. I spot a few sentence which can simplified. I would love to share with you. “ When I have set my mind to something..” can be simplified to “ When I set my mind to something”. When you were sharing after your weakness I observe mistakes with the tenses. Since it already occured to you, you should use past tense from I have a hard time to I had a hard time.
Thank you Joshua ! Keep up the good work.
